Chapter 15

Decoding the Signal

“Hey sleepy head.” Lilly felt her shoulder being nudged gently as Robbie’s voice slowly permeated her senses. Carefully she eased herself up, her mind all fuzzy with sleep.

“What time is it?” she asked.

“Just gone nine thirty.”

“Oh, so I’ve slept for a while then. What’s for dinner?”

“A while yes. You may be better off thinking about breakfast. Here have some coffee to get you started,” replied Robbie grinning at the confusion on Lilly’s face as she eventually realised that it was morning.

She pulled her knees up to her chest and slowly sipped the warm sweet coffee. It felt good. She felt good, more rested than she had in months. She yawned. “You mentioned breakfast?” she said eyeing him hopefully.

“Yes, we saved you some bacon and eggs. I can bring it in if you want.”

“I’ll come to the kitchen. I need to stretch my legs.”

As she polished off a plate of breakfast followed by toast and more coffee Robbie waited patiently enjoying the warmth of the kitchen range and the sight of Lilly glowing with pleasure.

“Mmmm, I think that must be the best food I ever tasted.” She pushed the plate away and sat back patting her slightly distended stomach.

Robbie couldn’t wait any longer, his curiosity was too great. “So, you found your tree then?” he asked.

“Ooh yes. Wow! It was amazing. It was like I knew it was her even before I got there.”

“Her?” he asked quizzically.

“Uhuh, can’t really explain why but it felt like a she. It was electric and so rich like, well it’s hard to describe. Like looking through a kaleidoscope but not.”

Robbie frowned. “A kaleidoscope but not?”

“Well, I didn’t really see things as such. It was more an explosion of sensations; I was overwhelmed with joy in a way I have never felt before. It changed over time too. It left me with an aching, a sense of yearning. I am not sure I experienced it all. A dog barked and brought me back to reality a bit abruptly. I think I need to go back.” Her breathing was quick and excited, her eyes had taken on a brightness he had never seen before.

“Are you sure? It might be too much for you. You were in quite a state when you got home yesterday evening.”

“I think it will be different next time. If you are with me, I am sure I will be okay. I want you to see the tree, my Signal Tree. She is so beautiful,” her voice cracked; tears of joy trickled down her cheeks.

“Okay. Maybe this afternoon when it’s a little warmer. In the meantime, why don’t you show me the pictures you took and where it is on the map. You remembered to make a note, I assume?” She nodded enthusiastically as she retrieved her phone and map from the pocket in her coat. He snuggled up next to her feeling suddenly protective.

That afternoon they ventured back to the tree. It was a dull and chilly day, they walked quickly to keep warm.
